What is a Number Line?

In Mathematics, a number line is described as a straight, horizontal line containing numbers placed at equal intervals along its length.

For young minds, the number line is an invaluable tool throughout primary school years as the resource makes the comparison of numbers easier for them. Throughout these years, the use of the line shifts moving from being utilized to order numbers and establish the concept of "greater than and less than" in early years, then to introduce the concepts of addition and subtraction during middle years and, finally, to multiplication and division in later years.

Ways to use

To teach, practice and assess the concepts of:

  • Addition - To add, move the slider to the right.

  • Subtraction- To subtract, move the slider to the left.

  • Multiplication - To multiply, skip places to the right.

  • Division - To divide, skip spaces to the left.

  • Ordering numbers (toddlers) - To do, print blank template.

  • Greater than and lesser than
