Early Mathematical Skill begins with Matching and Sorting!

Many parents tend to focus exclusively on rote counting but believe it or not, early mathematical skill begin with matching and sorting. Laying a solid foundation at preschool level is pertinent to success throughout the rest of your child's school years and by extension life. Just as when laying any other foundation for a house, the one for Mathematical skill will need some preparation and matching is the ideal tool.

To put into context, matching is the classification of same or similar objects based on their common properties. In early childhood education, these properties are often colours, shapes, sizes and pictures. Though these tasks may seem simple, they actually help your child develop range of thinking skills including early representation and problem-solving through the identification of similarities and differences. Additionally, this activity builds the foundation for later concepts such as algebra.
