The Importance of Phonics in Reading and Word Building
It can be said that Phonics skills are the necessary base in any Literacy Program and you may be wondering why. Let's start by first defining what is phonics.
Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking phonemes (sounds) in spoken language and graphemes(the symbols that represent them) in written language. The major goal of phonics is just that. "But why Phonics?" , you may still be asking. Well, learning that the relationships between sounds and letters are predictable will allow your child to apply the knowledge of these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words resulting in them being able to decode new words accurately and eventually, reading fluently.
The first 3 steps in teaching phonics to your mini are :
1.Decoding- The goal of this step is for them to be able to see the letter and sayits sound aloud. Start with the letters S,A,T,P,I,N.
2.Blending- In this step, there is a shift from individual sounds to blending the sounds to say whole words often 2 letters long.
3.Decoding CVC(Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) Words- In step 3, the focus shifts to your mini being able to "sound out" 3 letter words arranged in the Sequence Consonant-Vowel-Consonant for example: hat, pin and rug.
These skills are also essential to you child being able to complete the tasks of word building and word formation.
